Recently, the results of the 4th National Structural Design Information Technology Contest were officially unveiled, which was sponsored by the Education Committee of China Civil Engineering Society (CCES), and co-hosted by the School of Civil Engineering of Tsinghua University, the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation of South China University of Technology, the Civil Engineering and Architectural Society of Guangdong, and Guangdong Architectural Design & Research Institute Co. Ltd. A total of 342 colleges and universities with 2,259 teams participated in this contest, including 290 colleges and universities in Group A with 1,413 teams, and 52 colleges and universities in Group B with 207 teams. Among the nearly 9,000 participants, the 8 teams of SWJTU were awarded 2 first prizes, 3 second prizes and 3 third prizes.
Based on the theme of “An Assembled Dormitory Building Design for a University Campus” which was set by experts invited by the committee of the contest, students were required to make an appropriate structural selection and structural arrangement according to the architectural plans and restrictions, use the structural analysis software provided by the contest for structural calculation analysis, submit the design results according to the structural calculation analysis and design specifications, and briefly explain the characteristics of the design results.
The contest requires the participants should not only master a solid foundation of professional knowledge, strong structural optimization design skills, and the ability to analyze the calculation, but also have a certain understanding of the frontier knowledge related to BIM technology, and to quickly learn and use the relevant software for structural design. Meanwhile, this is also a good opportunity to improve the ability of scientific and technological innovation and practical skills of college students.
